1997 I believe. Close to the end of the production of the steel frames. This looks a lovely example indeed

Thanks Specialized seemed to enjoy swapping the decals around on their bikes between the top tube and the down tube, to keep people on their toes!

Sounds right to me. I think 98 stumpy's had black stem/bars and 99 bikes had an extra flash under the bike name
