Had a message from my big boss yesterday, well he spoke to my AM who passed the message on.

'I'm coming to the shop on Monday at 5pm...all staff to be present...I have an important announcement' says Monsieur Grand Fromage (not our GF...a real French GF..with real French idiosyncrasies...lots of shoulder shrugging etc. Our memos are quite literally in Allo Allo stylee...cracks me up)

'Erm...anything to worry about?' asks my AM (bearing in mind a few recent shop closures)

'No, no...it's good news' came the reply.

Now I know senior management types, and I reckon that roughly translates to:

Yes, we are closing your shop down but good news ....

1. We have a vacancy at our shop in Basildon

2. This is a great opportunity to re-evaluate your career direction

3. We're giving you two weeks notice

please add to the list

There are always certain calls to meet that send shivers down your spine ...horrible feeling!

Fingers crossed for you Carl, but sure its nothing to worry about!

Thanks Rob...but actually I would love to be made redundant (as long as the package was decent enough)....I would use the money to kick-start my own Independent Wine Merchants....something I'm close to doing already anyway.

we're turning half the shop into a second hand retrobike part shop while you continue selling

erm....the storeroom does look a wee bit like a bike shop at the moment
Oh no! Where would I keep my stuff :(

Fingers crossed the other way then:) . At my mere age I have been made redundant twice and I have to say each time I have ended up better off! So go for it if it happens !

Last time saw me sent on my way witha decent pay off and then almost immediately land contract work then shortly after a new perm position that nearly doubled my previous wage.

Infact every one (at my level) who was let go at the same time is now better off for it. So yeah...go for it!

I can just imagine how dissapointed you will be now when you realise the reason for the meeting was for your boss to give you the group Wine merchant of the month award with accompanying photocopied certificate

  Got a wall of those certificates already...Outstanding Performance for January etc etc...sometimes they remember to sign them  Would prefer a cash bonus but I guess they think we are proud of the little certificate. Funny bunch.
Got our Christmas Hampers in February...not even a bottle of wine in it and my boss has been voted the most influential man in the French Wine Industry...and also is in the Top 10 Rich List (in France)..maybe top 20?

Forget what you might think about the generosity of the Scottish or those from Yorkshire...the French are seriously tight.

Mmmmm..maybe I'm exaggerating...maybe not as tight as Yorkshire folk

AM says..... Shop is closing and you're all out on your ear but the good news is I'm getting a pay rise as I helped streamline the company.
