Retro Newbie
hi all, i'm Rob live in liverpool, and like most newbies in need of some help/advice. up untill the start of this year always used a car, and still had the bike my mum and dad bought me when i was 16 some universal thing with duel suspension so binned it as it was a wreck and got a cheap thing off ebay a silverfox attitude, to take the kids to the forest and around abouts for bit of fun, in july sold my car and started using my bike for work got road tyres and hydrolics fitted and a few other things.

and thought i actually like this and so began to find out some info about it and stumbled upon this wonderful site.
I have some idea of age think its 94 as it has altus a20 gear on it as oppossed to the thumb shifters of the 92 model, have come to belive this was the kiliracer frame but used altus parts. So it has the altus a20 levers/shifters, and the crank arms are a20s that need re-threading due to someone cross threading a peddle. i guess what i want to know is peoples oppinions of where to go with this, as i fancy the challenge of restoring it to former glory but also like the prospect of having modern parts on a retro frame, i just dont know much about it as this would be my first resto. Help haha, thanks, oh just orderd a rear mech as the one on dont work, its a deore lx, so it begins i can feel my wallet quivering already. Rob

Welcome Rob, nice retro-resto to start with.

Have a little look for 'e-stay' using the search function and you will find lots of info. There are some who prefer nut'n'bolt resto's and other who like to update and modify, so whichever takes your fancy.

You'll also find a few folks who know these bikes well and will be able to advise.

Your wallet is right to be afraid, retrobiking is an addiction, with no known cure

Hi mate ,
what a great start ! a classic project for the price of a fish supper :)
i have almost finished my first mini retro rebuild and cant wait to get the cash together to start another , so terrified wallets all round

cheers paul

thanks for the welcome and the links there great i actually got my stolen bike back tonight some honest fella dopped it back to my front door after my son seen it and told the fella it was his dads bike that had been stolen so well happy problem is my wife is now asking why i need three bikes hahaha i think ive won with its handy to have a spare, the resto is still on and i have something to use in between, happy days so its xmas out of the way and a month or so of saving and see what i can find, anyone have a rough idea how much powder coating is, just theres a lot of scratches and pitting and think thi will be a must thnks again guys really looking forward to this just dont think my wife is hahaha oh well

3 is only the start

My wife allows 3 for me, and 1 for her, but not the other 4. It was another 6 until I gave 1 away, and sold another in the past week

Welcome. Before you start, I would just check out the rear drop out (where the rear mech attaches). Is the hole where the rear mech usually goes cross threaded or stripped. Its not going to work very well set up as is. If stripped you would need to get it helicoiled..not expensive and worth doing before you get it sprayed......or of course it would make a great singlespeed project. :D

Powdercoating costs around £30 to £40, and I'm sure forum members will be able to recommend someone local.

If the thread for the rear mech hangar is damaged, you can get a very slim nut which is fitted from behind, they unfortunately cost about a tenner, but it gives you another option if that thread is stripped.

i had not actually noticed if its stripped ill have a look tomorow in work i dont mind spending out to get it right so if i have to buy anything extra so be it, i work for it so why not eh. just got this in the post tonight

so going to have a busy weekend swapping and changing things as have this to go on and a set of deore v brakes, new handle bars and brakes for my bmx, and a 180 rotor to go on my silverfox. ill let you know how i get on with the lx mech just hope the thread is fine. I probably wont get it powder coated for a few months so gives me time to put that money to one side and get any bits i need think the next thing will be crank arms but struggling to find A20s anyone know what would make a good replacement or what was put on the earlyer kiliracer as i believe mine came after called the eliteracer with altus parts. thanks for the help by the way guys still finding my feet with this but enjoying the learning curve. Rob
