New Orange Prestige :-) old news?

"Yeah but, no but, yeah but......"

The Prestige can hardly be described as a play bike can it?

Surely it's an XC whippet. I get seasick with the forks set to 90mm on the E4, I seriously question 130mm travel at just one end on a cross country bike. I mean, if you're hucking it downhill and doin' huge drop offs, then you'd have brought a different frame surely? :?

I think it's just a modern trail bike. My understanding is like TaulPaul that it's really designed for a 100mm fork, but Orange are saying if you want to fit an adjustable 100-140mm fork, that's fine, but the more travel you dial in, the slower the handling will get. That's the same kind of thing that Cotic say about the Soul, or On-One about the Inbred.

I think the thing about retro bikes is that they were designed for a style of riding cross-country that most people don't do any longer, at least not in the UK. But just to change the subject slightly, I suspect that the much greater popularity of 29ers in the US indicates that there's a lot more cross-country riding still done over there because they've got much more land to ride on. Let's face it, most British so-called mountain bikes never go anywhere near a mountain, it all just happens in the local woods etc. and you need more of an all-round play bike.

well ive got a new prestige and it rides like a dream, i fitted it with 100mm forks as i wanted it for xc so didnt see the point of fitting anything bigger.
but as for my clockwork, well she's running 130mm revelations. light and work well. and if any of you have riden down garbon?? pass and some other decents in the lakes you will be thankfull of having 130mm up front lol makes it a good all rounder, although it does suffer on the climbs as the front likes to lift slightly ??? at the end of the day it all depends on your personal preference and how you ride, i like to ride fast so need a little more up front for slamming into rocks and geting away with it??

Wow great responses! 8)

I'm also into retro/old cars, as a kinda more involved hobby, so I see what ya saying about new stuff, though i think its the future where it may get silly after reading MBUKS future predictions. So yeah, new cars are abit annoying, the new Mini for example doent do the same job or cater for the same people as the original, its a different beast really. In this case I agree with the retrobikers saying its a mild evolution this Prestige, which I reckon it looks like. Buyers of the original will be keen, its made from the same stuff by the same people, just takes a bit more of a beating style riding - win IMO 8) I mean, look at the New Raleigh Chopper, i got a close look at one, It's a cheap quite ugly alloy wannabe with cheap modern bits! no wonder the Chopper geeks wont touch em! :P

Originally my mates n I swapped MTB's for BMX's The XC bikes didn't suit or style, which was XC but too much other monkeying about! so either they broke or were a bit clumsy.

Now I'm back Into MTBing, lots has changed! OMG can't keep up with da kids :o I'm on my Second Identiti Dr Jekyll XL great bike, half BMX half MTB featuring 120 travel, but a fair bit overkill for my needs most of the time. I do miss the spritely runs cross country, or anywhere hence enjoying my commuter too much. So I can see it getting traded for something a bit more XC rooted, once the full susser is tried out. :D

I can see a big comeback to XC, most of the MTB stars have em to keep fit on n get about whatever discipline.

tell ya what, i'm really tempted with one of these, with other bits chosen with a nod to the past, and the best of today.

In the meantime I'm getting ready for my no suspension retro frame to set off from belgium! :D :D :D

EDIT heres the Orange site for it, sounds like its still a pretty focused clever thing. :) http://www.orangebikes.co.uk/2008bikes/prestige-s.php
