Fantastic! very jealous you got it for free.

Some of those parts are rare and will be worth a few quid to the right people - coda bits will be pretty rare.

Maybe split it and offer it for sale to maximise £ and go and buy a modern bike with disc brakes with the money!

You can't fit a disc to the rear without an ugly frame adapter, so it isn't much of an option, even to someone who is not an obsessive retrobiker.

However there is a much greater advantage in V-brakes relative to cantis than there is in discs relative to Vs, so upgrading to Vs may well be your best bet. Discs would require new wheels and levers as well as the brakes themselves, so the cost would be out of all proportion to the benefit.

You may find that renovating the Judy fork is a cheaper option than buying a new fork, and a new fork might also look crass as it would be designed to suit a modern frame. A new fork would be more capable but you would have to buy a new aheadset and ahead stem to replace the threaded items you have there.

If the Judy is seized, it almost certainly means that the elastomers are shot. It is also quite likely that the damper has failed, as most Judy dampers did (unless this one has already had a replacement damper). You can buy steel springs and replacement dampers at not too great a cost and these are better than the items originally fitted by Rockshox.

It is a very nice bike, especially as a gift, and it should be possible to turn it into a very usable bike without too much expenditure.
