New cranks for old ?? Saracen Eiger...year ???

About to start work on my first total rebuild. A Saracen Eiger.

Original crankset was an STX SE but the LH Arm has been replaced at some stage with a cheap Taiwan replacement.

Frame is going in for a respray or Powder Coat so I don't know whether to go retro and buy old crankset, knowing that rings are getting harder to get, or go new and maybe throw in a new Deore ??

Is it wrong to put new components on an old bike? The other thing that worried me, was that would old components look out of place on a new coated frame?

Any advice gladly taken :?

It's not wrong to put modern on but IMO a retro one would look better. Still plenty of cranks and rings about so you souldn't run out any time soon.

Can anyone identify the year ???

After the powdercoat, contact gil_m for decals... He did mine and has really perfected these so that they really look original.

I would stick with period cranks... will be easy to find an old LX or similar on here or ebay. Just polish it up and fit new rings, which are still easy to source.

About the 'new paint, old parts'...You can make old parts look like new with a bit of polishing and painting.

Or, you could do what I did.. I went 100% new on my NOS Saracen Protrax with NOS Judy XC Forks.

Hope this helps,

Chaser
