11 is the number of teeth on the smallest sprocket on your cassette and 30 the number on the largest- gives the range of the cassette basically. 11-30 is a wide range - you can get 11-28 in XT as well but Evans had sold out of that one!

So in simpleton terms the 11-30 is essentially easier than the 11-28 going up a big hill?

It has an 11-28 on it at the moment.

You might be able to find a 12-32 cassette which would be even better for Peaks-style riding - I think we discussed this on the last ride. As the others have said - change the cogs and chain together where possible.

But at least you've discovered the fettlling before you really need your bike rule - if only we could keep to it!
