Beam bikes were the 'next big thing' in the mid-90s, particularly among the triathlon crowd. Whilst the beam was supposed to reduce rider fatigue, unless the rider had a smooth pedal stroke, there was a fair amount of bob and sway - particularly for big-gear mashers. Stephen Roche even test rode one because of his iffy back. Softride were the main exponents, Zipp made one too. The heavy beam, reliability problems and finally UCI regs killed them off.
