Never owned a retro bike before what do you advise ?

Trojan

Retro Newbie
Hi i want to get a retro ride but not sure where to start really what sort of bikes do people recomend and wher should i shop for about £1,000 thanks :D

Thats like someone telling you what kind of food you should like.

There are so many variables and no correct answer.

I suppose I (we?) should ask what is making you want to get into retro bikes in the first place and what do you intend to do with this retro bike.

what was your first nice mountain bike? Where did or do you ride? What bike did you once drool over? Or what inspired you to pedal into the woods?

It's an interesting question - I guess 99% of us rode and owned these bikes originally BITD when they were current rather than retro so have a nostalgic love for them.

What is your biking background? What was your first MTB?

:)

£1000 will get you pretty much any retro bike you want these days bar the really top end ones.

Like others have said there is no right answer.

Look within yourself to start with - what did you ride back in the day? What do you want? Something you'll enjoy riding? Or something you'll enjoy looking at?

If all these questions draw a blank I'd go for a early to mid 90s steel hardtail with M900 XTR and rigid or suspension forks depending on your taste

same as above .................................. but I would buy 5 or 6 nice retrobikes with a grand off ebay :)

If I were you I would turn away from here, run, save yourself, Stick to the road lad an stay of t' moor. Go before its too late

Hi Trojan,

Welcome!

Personally I do not think how much or what can I get for XXXX money is a good starting point. Maybe start a bit less ambitious with a relatively 'cheap' bike you desired back in the day. Than decide whether you like going retro or not

....to end up with a stable of 25 rigs a couple of years later, like I did

I always loved a lot of the 90's bikes but struggled to get what i wanted due to money (Not having any) but this is not the problem now. It's just that i have always loved the full sus bikes like the Manitou FS and the Cannondale Raven's but never having owned one i did'nt want to run before i could walk if you get my drift  .
