Hmmm, I don't think your steerer is supposed to extend above the top of the stem in a threadless setup - the cap at the top is supposed to press the top of the stem onto the headset.
I've seen it done, as the load is supposed to be borne by the bolts attaching the steerer to the stem anyway, but it's really not ideal... Plus I think it looks silly...
I'm basing this on what Park Tools say: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=65

some people put spacers on top of the stem so the stem is half way up the protruding steerer, if you see what I mean, and put the cap on top of that.

ive lost the really long post so i a bit fucked off
so the 1's that saw it are likely to be the only 1's cos im fucked if im writing all that again

To ibob- ignore what park say, ask 3 real engineers and get 3 differing answers .they do make quality tools though
Yeah ur right it aint supposed to but thats purely aesthetics, and if there is absolutely no way of changing the steerer im willing to put up with it
mechanically speaking its not adding stresses but is lessening them on the top section of the steerer tube by spreading the forces over a greater area

To orange 71-Yeah i've seen that too ,and as long as it isnt too long it u can get away with it,but with the extension coupled with full length bolt system ,azonic head lock ,the bolt is recessed down inside the extension so no cap is really needed
