Mystery Syncros?

Hello everybody. I have been searching for a long time to find out what this bash guard is. I believe its a Syncros Log cog but there are no pictures on the internet of one except the 1992 catalogue. I ask all you fellow retro bikers, with your vast knowledge and wisdom to help me out so I can sleep at night. Does the Log Cog actually exist? Do I have a knock-off? Probably. Anyway, Any help you could give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re:

Looks similar in design to syncros rings I've had. The cut outs at least. Cant help more than that I'm afraid.

We used to call those buzz saw... I have no idea if that’s the official name
Buzz Saw was the trademark name of stainless steel chainrings made by OnZa.
The small cutouts and the four round and one squared off large cutouts are the same as many Syncros rings, although it’s a trifle odd that it’s not marked with Syncros somehow.
Mine in the pics have either round or squared off large cutouts but I’ve definitely seen Syncros rings with four round and one squared shape like yours.
I’ll do some investigating.

Re:

The Log Cog definitely existed. I remember the discussion about them, but we were weight weenies and I rode with a 'cross rider who just leapt off and jumped over any obstructions higher than a bb and chainring.

Right...I can't be definitive since like you I can't find anything exactly like this in any photos. But search for Syncros bashring and you get some 104mm BCD which indeed are very similar to yours. Sorry that's not definitive but it at least confirms the 'log cog' bit.

Re:

Here it is (albeit having different smaller cutouts) in the ‘92 catalogue.
I’ve asked the experts on the Canadian retro MTB Facebook page, if anyone knows it’s those guys.

Re:

They should do as some of them worked thee or rocky mountain. :-)

They didn't make rings till about 95/6 I think and then they where sugino/Shimano style. I think 97 they may have started the two holes style.
But I don't mind being corrected on that.

thanks everyone for the lnfo. I would love to know if I have a "diamond in the ruff" or not.

fyi - the bike this came on had nukeproof hubs and a syncros bb, and some 900 series xtr components. Not that that matters, but the previous owner did put some good stuff on this bike. so maybe this is the real thing. I will probably be contacting syncros to see what they say about it.

I think I found my answer. Someone on another form mentioned this maybe an axiom bash guard. I couldn't find any pics until now. I think my bash guard is an axiom and not a Log cog. oh well. Too bad.
Does anyone have an actual Syncros Log Cog?
