Mystery Bike

Retro Newbie
Hi everybody,

I wonder if anyone can help me identify my vintage bike. I purchased it secondhand in 1985 so it is at least 40 years old. It came with Shimano 600 chainset, gears, changers. Brooks saddle, Mafac brakes mounted off frame brazed shafts, Shimano wheels. It has chrome dipped front and rear forks and Campag ends.

I am attaching pictures of the frame as it currently looks (I am in the process of stripping off many layers of paint to get to the bare frame). It may look scruffy but is obviously a quality bike and the running gear is in perfect condition for 40+ years old.

Thanks for all your help.

The way the rear stays wrap around the top of the seatpost is I believe I have heard a Carlton characteristic, though I also have it on My Raleigh Grand Prix (Canadian built). Other things like the triangular piece where the rear stays join is like my Raleigh, though I have not seen anything like those added bits on the front forks.

How about looking up the serial number on the Raleigh serial number databases around the net http://www.sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/dating.html

Re:

Could do with some close up detail pics with more resolution.
From what I can see the same frame components were probably used by 100 frame builders. If the chain stays are crimped not round/oval/round it usually indicates a large company.

Details of lugs, ends etc. might help.
