My Orange X1 Restoration

Right I apologize right away for not fitting true retro parts to the bike . . . But to be honest my first aim was to get the bike back on the Road for this summers riding and im not sure what colour she is going to be come this winter . . . . This is her Advert Photo on Ebay:

Firstly the bike was absolutely shot it hadn't been used for 2 years and i think it was stored outdoors for most of that time, i should hav really walked away, but I was happy that the frame was sound . . . I too should have looked at the Specifications of the Bike before bidding but i did bid with my heart and not my head  For instance it was a 1 inch Steerer OMG so I knew straight away that I would have problems with new Forks! So I went about rebuilding the Old 95 Judy's that were fitted as standard, all the elastomers were degraded and spent the best part of the day scraping all the old muck out, replaced most of the seals, filled the damper with oil sprayed her up and ordered a set of springs (To replace the elastomers) from a very nice American Guy from FleaBay! Now I have 80 to 100 mm travel and she feels as smooth as Butter :D
I Also experimented with a Set of 97 Judy DH, although being a 1 1/8 the steerer I could take the crown and steerer of my old Judy's and just swap em round . . . this was going to be my back up plan it the Old ones were unsalvageable!

Seat Post again was a nightmare as it was shimmed to 26.4mm with an Aluminum Shim, as it was Standard! Everyone knows how differential Metal corrosion causes the 2 materials to basically weld together so I had to get the dremmel out and rather like Key hole Surgery cut the old shim out very carefully! Now I have a Synthetic Shim and a lovely 27.2 mm Seat post with a Velo (24-7) Seat!

Rear shock was next, Basically I replaced her with a RockShox Deluxe because the Strata Shock wasn't holding any pressure! (Strata is now away getting a new lease of life)

With that new bottom bearing, cranks, Pedals (All shimano Deore), Headset, Stem, Bars, Grips and Cables replaced she is just about to go back on the rocky paths she was built for! Only for a good friend of mine to set up the Suspension, Gears and Brakes she's ready to go . . . . Ok its a mixture of new and old but like I said earlier I want to ride her so bad!

Near to distant future is to get my hands on a set of Pace RC35/36's then make my mind up to what color to paint the back end of the bike???? Any Ideas you guys can throw my way the please do!

I hope she Rides WELL :D

Well I have to say bloody good show!

I saw this appear on our what's it worth thread, then on ebay the first time with a start price of £300, then again with a start price of £150 and I was going to bid, but not much more than the start price so I let it go.

I am a bit of a purist when it comes to restoring, not 100% but quite a lot, and i have to say this is one of the few bikes that i have seen with lots of modern bits on where i just say sod it!

Ride it and enjoy it, hell it might even ride better with springs at both ends!

Nice ride, and well done.

If you are planning to do a more sympathetic resto later in the year though, let's do some serious talking

Nice restoration, looks loads better. I take it you sprayed the fork lowers to match the rear triangle? personally I'd leave the rear orange even if you fit some other forks.

Cheers for the feedback guys, yeah buddy i sprayed the forks to match the back - like i said this is just so she is back on the Road, let the Retroing begin :D

That was me that posted the whats it worth, I some how got chatting with the seller as they didnt have a clue about the bike and tried to help out .....

Cheers development_Cycle . . . To be honest the cranks, pedals and BB are modernish . . . . the Bars and stem are a year out maybe 1997, the rest is near enough standard . . . . i dont know what colours to go for! I love my FIR Wheels . . . Anodised Color what??????

hi fella, nice job it looks really good.
my x1 is a small frame with yellow rear triangle and yellow rock shocks.....and yellow wellgo pedals. i'm in two minds about the overkill of yellow.
i've got hold of some rc36 evo's to put on it at some point....

I do love the look in yellow . . . . Im so jealous you've got a set of RC36's . . . But i do have Justbackdated sourceing me a set . . . . Can you tell me what braking and grearing system you using mine are both Shimano Deore XT?

I like the fork and triangle colour match - might try that on mine when I *eventually* get round to rebuilding it
