My 1990 Kona Cindercone Labour of Love

Ah, the Saracen Tufftrax - I remember that one - takes me back to my days of building bikes when I worked at Halfords. Always liked the Saracen bikes.

I will be trying to leave the paint alone (save for the down tube and chainstay) on mine, touching up where needed. My wife believes this rebuild to be an act of folly. My 3 year old son though recognises the value of this potential inheritance - "will this be my bike Dad?"

Im looking forward to this one 8), I have one identical and is my fav bike to ride out of them all ! Nothing handles quite like it, I use this regularly the perfect bike 8) Light weight , fast, head turning and bomb proof. That also reminds that it needs cleaning, Its covered in the aftermath of the weekend

Made some progress.....resprayed the seat tube white, now I need to figure out how to apply a splatter finish that looks ok...

Sourced the shifters - Suntour X-Press and the levers - Suntour XC. Also got an Avocet saddle from the US. Suntour XC Comp cranks and chainrings with a Ninja inner ring.

Looks like it shaping up !

I do think the XC Pro and Comp stuff from this era really were excellent groupsets (With the possible exception of the gear levers and cassette). The mechs were good, the pedals and cranks were well finished and reliable and those brake levers were some of the most comfortable ever. Particularly liked the idea of 'greaseguard' on hubs and hubset around this time too.

Should be a cracking bike.
