Some of my first mtb memories were watching the mountain bike race during the interval of the 500cc motocross grand prix at Hawkstone Park, Shropshire. If you don't know Hawkstone its a beast of a circuit, deep sand and a truely monsterous hill. The mtb course was one lap of the track in reverse.
The winner won a bike for their efforts, probably an alpinestars or a Scott as I remember first seeing them on the trade stands at Hawstone being promoted heavily. I believe Rob Meek (numerous times Weston Beach race winner) won the first one in 1990 and the event was organised by Dickie Dye with Jared Smith involved somewhere.
Anyway, as my memory is a little hazy on this subject, I asked on the vintage MX forums and that produced some good pictures:
