Motorfactors and parts rant

Always worth checking the dealer prices... you might be pleasantly surprised! They're actually cheaper quite often.

Certainly for Saab, my main dealer is amazingly competitive for servicing my ancient 9000.

This time a water pump, initial impression was why has is got 6 blades instead of the old 8 and why only 3 intake holes instead of 4, no matter i'm sure it'll be fine. Go to fit and the holes don't quite line up which means getting the last bolt in a bit fiddly, but in it goes. Then down to tightening the last bolt and the head clean snaps off

Have another look at the pump flange and it's significantly thinner than the old which means the bolts are going in further into the block! And in this case hitting the end FFS!! Now i've got a right pain in the arse job to do just because some company wanted to save a few pennies on materials!

Surely the wrong pump? I don't think Id have even attempted fitting it, old and new part would be paying a visit to the offending motor factor.

I tend to find the parts they supply OK, maybe the German stuff can cope - the French stuff is all a bit on a wing and a prayer with the OEM stuff!

Not the wrong pump, you can see where they have cut on materials to save on costs, to the untrained eye they are pretty much identical.

How about a set of Blue print glow plugs that lasted a year in my Ranger, they were ADL Blueprint FFS and not cheap either. Fitted some Densos now to see if they are better.

Carl.

Sorry, I'm missing something, I thought you said it had six blades instead of eight and less intake holes... :?

If it was the right pump, I agree, that's proper sloppy...

That's right, they had cut back on the number of blades on the impeller. it's still the same overall size and shape and the flange is the same, albeit thinner. If you had hold of the old one and were asked to make it cheaper then it would look like the new one. You do get different impeller designs from manufacturer to manufacturer though.

I'm just surprised how far some companies go. Ultra parts are the worst i've encountered and won't touch them with a barge pole. Bought some gaskets and seals years ago. Every single valve stem seal split as it was placed. The headgasket was just not fit for purpose, the red outer water jacket seal wasn't continuous and broken in places.

You know it's junk when they write "quality" on the packaging.

Thanks, I understand - not come across Ultra parts but will steer well clear. Have you got your bolt out yet?

refurbished Mondeo MKIII steering racks used to only last 9 months - which was ok as they were guaranteed for 12, I had to have two replaced.

Some pads seem to last 5 minutes whereas some cheapies last ages.

Parts failing under warranty is great on the one hand but on the other, why should i waste another Saturday afternoon swapping the part when it shouldn't break so soon, and that's after arguing that it wasn't caused by X or Y.

Ringo: No haven't attempted to get the bolt out yet.
