I'm off work at the moment, taking a break between jobs so I've had time on my hands and have spent a lot of that at the tip... As well as the 1917 Singer sewing machine for £2, BSO (rideable but crap) for £5 and some nice Deore DX kit for £3, this week I found a Decathlon kiddies mountain bike for £4.

Unlike most of the kiddies junk out there this is a proper mtb, just tiny with 20" wheels. It had quick release seat-post & wheels, alloy rims and hubs, alloy cranks, decent v-brakes, a sealed bearing BB and 7 gears with gripshift too. It needed a little tlc as somebody had come off of it and snapped off the brake lever and the cables were shot. A quick trip over to see mtbfix furnished me with all the bits I needed, including some dinky polished alloy v-brake levers for kiddies hands and then some tweaking sorted the rest out. It was the first mtb I've not been able to ride once I'd fixed it!

I went over to my mates house as I knew his son had outgrow his current franken-bike and he was pleased as punch. It was a tad big, but I just dropped the saddle (until it touched the frame) and off he went. At just 5 1/2 years old, within five minutes he'd mastered the gears and was merrily winging his way up the road, coming back stood up on the pedals, before hoiking on the back brake and drifting the rear end round in an excellent skid! Top notch, he's definitely got the biking bug.

All in it cost £20 with the new parts for a really great, light little bike.
