More about Derby

Well, preliminary searching for a mooring near Derby, where I think I'm moving to is not hopeful. Which is bringing me to the sad realisation I may need to sell the boat. :cry:

I'm going up there in a couple of weeks to check various possibilities, but this may mean I have to find a place to live. I could get into halls or find a student house in Derby, but I don't want to do that, and while I could leave my dog with my dad I'd much prefer not to.

So, Derby people, where is (a) nice to live and (b) within easy cycling distance of Derby? Let's say no more than 7 miles, to make up for my (frankly pathetic) level of fitness.

Have you tried the moorings at Shardlow?

In terms of places to live there's lots of nice areas. I guess depends on your budget though. Plenty of modern houses in Allestree, Oakwood, Littleover, Mickleover. All nice enough places. Avoid Mackworth.

There is some nice countryside around Kedleston Hall in Mercaston, Muggington and Weston Underwood -which is quite close to the Polytechnic, via a bridleway. If you can find somewhere to rent here it's a nice place to live.

Oh, is it like that.. I knew someone who rented a room around there and they were pretty poor...

As for me, well put it this way -if I had the Minimum Wage coming in, I'd be rejoicing. Almost all my income goes on rent, with most of the remainder buying old bike bits and, erm.. wine and beer. I spend hardly anything on food and don't have any heating :shock: but for me it's worth it, just to live in the sticks in a lovely old cottage with a bit of land.

Not all rural rental is as expensive as you might imagine, especially if you're not bothered about 'mod con's' like central heating, ...running water, electricity etc
Seriously though, it's worth persevering; the last place I lived, a sweet but tiny cottage in Matlock was £450 pm - much the same as a terrace houce in Derby..

Just to clarify the point, I'm not talking about some decrepit hovel or lodgings with some lonely weirdo!
it's just that most rental properties seem to come with lots of modern facilities- CH, dishwasher, recessed-lights etc , freshly decorated and immaculate.. it's what most people want. But if you're not bothered about such stuff, there are the odd places where the owner cant afford or isn't inclined to modernise, and these can be much cheaper. My Cottage has an absolute minimum of modern er, 'influence' and I love it for being so authentic (basic) -there's no central heating and the bathroom's just a shower, sink and WC in the corner of a 'bedroom'! It's spotlessly clean though, the walls are 2ft thick and the 17C beams and fire places are to die for. Point is if it had been modernised I reckon it would be £200 pm more. Not many folks want to live like this anymore hence places like this are rare, but they can be found if you persevere.

Are there any country estates around there? They often have ex farmhands properties for rent, and are usually more easy going with regard to dogs etc. Since they are frequently basic and remote, they are usually relatively cheap.
Not many people want to live in the spooky woods...

yep we got Kedleston Hall on the doorstep, but not sure if it comes with any affordbale property. Others within a few miles like Calke Abbey, too.
