modern wheels in older frame ... problem..?

i have 28'' x 1-5/8 700C ''RIGIDA'' steel chrome wheels on my Peugeot
straight side-walls......rear OLN = 120mm
with Continental ULTRA Sport 700x23C

[.....maybe 23C might be too narrow according to Sheldon's chart
and the fact it's difficult to get them seated up on the rim shoulder]

so - I want to install new 700C alloy wheels available from LBS, but he says
1.......''I have spoken to our mechanic regarding the OLD, and he does not believe you will be able to adapt the 120mm steel frame to accommodate the 135mm OLD...''
anybody done this ...?

and 2.....''700c x 28c are the smallest that are suitable for use on the wheels...''
will there be enough clearance ..?

I reckon your LBS is right. Spreading the frame by 15mm is a lot to ask and definitely a job for a professional even if it could be done. 135mm is mountain bike or disc-braked road bike size rather than road wheel size though. Even so, normal road wheels at 130mm might be a bit of stretch too. As for the tyres, are they to go on the new wheels or the old?

First, road wheels will be 130mm across. If the ones you want are not, get some others. Secondly , they can be made to fit quite easily. Those who want to sound technical call it "cold setting" . Its bending the rear end. Its 5mm either side and dead easy. If you want to be fussy , align the dropouts afterwards so that they are parallel. Hold the bike and with a hand on each dropout pull them apart.
I am going to take a guess that as the bike has steel rims it isn't exactly 753 steel. Just give them a yank.

1...i now find the new alloys at 135mm were advertised by the store as ''Hybrid''
so that option is cancelled

2...another online store is advertising 130mm OLN
these look promising - and i have a new 8speed cassette
listed as taking 18-28c tyres
but i will phone him about that as the rims are 19mm...?

i think i can spread to 130mm using 8mm threaded bar and nuts/washers

3....tyres are not the deciding factor atm
i plan to use the mint chrome wheels on my dry-weather 'best bike'.. the blue ''Loire''
but will buy 25c as i think the 23c are too narrow with straight-wall rims.!

4.. the new alloys are for the 54cm 'Premiere' which i am refurbishing - to be my everyday bike and not an Original
and, depending on the rim width i find - i will either fit my Conti ULTRA 23C - or buy new suitable tyres

as above i have dumped the 135mm sale
and i have ordered some 8mm threaded bar to stretch the stays if necessary to 130mm

good tip about the drop-outs..

PS.....i just have a lead on a used wheelset with 124mm OLN - could be the answer.!!

Go with the narrower wheel if you can. I've tried to use a 126mm wheel in a 110 spacing on her mixte and it is an utter biatch to get the wheel in, needing a lot of swearing and pinched fingers. It's a stretch too far in my opinion.

124mm into a 120mm space will go in no problem, 130mm will be difficult and leave the derailleur pointing out of line.

I'm going for the 124mm if i can afford it.... :facepalm:

if i do stretch to 130mm i can re-align the RD drop i think
already done a smidge to verticalize [haha] the rear mech - so it can be done

Here's a good article that explains.

120 to 130 should be fine. Even if you spread it permanently to say 125 mm then you can then squeeze in a 130.
