Depends on the hub.

If it's a Dura-Ace hub that's more than a couple of years old, or an Ultegra-105 level wheelset (WH-R7800,R7801,R600,R601, R5600, R560 IIRC) then it won't.

It will with a teeny tiny spacer on the freehub before fitting cassette- this stops the big sprocket hitting the spokes....

Err. NO.

Worked 3 years in Shimano Tech support and you would not believe the number of dealers that couldn't figure this out. And it went on and on as the junior riders bought these wheels second-hand and couldn't get cassettes in the ratios they needed.

10-speed specific hubs, with the alloy-type freehub body with the larger splines, will only run 10-speed SHIMANO cassettes. You can run the 10-speed Shimano cassettes on 8,9 or any other type of 10 speed freehub body, provided you put the spacer behind the cassette, which is not there to stop the sprockets hitting the spokes, but to even out the width as a 10spd cassette is narrower than a 9-speed one.

To illustrate....

Will run 8,9 or 10 speed.

Will only take Shimano 10-speed cassettes.

Agreed that 10 speed specific shimano hubs will not take 8/9 cassettes. I think my (badly written :-) ) point is that you can use 8/9/10 on most shim. hubs. I was thinking of R550 wheels (original model) for example....... With these wheels a 10 speed cassette will contact the spokes unless the 1.5mm spacer is fitted

Andy (20 years in the biz- never worked for Shimano but did a Sturmey-Archer hub rebuilding masterclass :-) :-) )

hmmm not sure on the hub, doesn't seem to have any branding on. looks identical to a formula one i have on another bike (minus the disc mount), spose i'll just whip the cassette off and give it a go :)
