modern hybrids - does 2 + 2 = 5?

I commute 120 miles a week. My route takes in country roads, bridle paths through the woods, farm track and some main road action. I built up an early 90's Saracen steel frame and fork with bits from the mancave and it's brilliant. Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres are fine in all conditions including last year's snow. They get a bit slippy slidey in the mud through the woods though.

now that I think about it, it would be fun building up a custom commuter.
I guess I just quite fancy a modern ride in the stable that I dont mind getting more abuse than my pride'n'joys.

the road bike suggestion is a good idea, but I also like the idea of less maintenance with hub gears...i've a little one on the way very soon and wont have the time to be elbow deep in grease every other night during cold wet winter nights.

It could be argued that im trying to justify a BadBoy, because I am! (any excuse to buy a new bike/or build upanother one) but im more interested in peoples opinions on hybrid bikes and their suitability..

anyone have any experience of shimano alfine?

Have to say, I like the look of the Bad Boy ..... apart from the chain guard.

For my commute, I've got a Specialized Langster and love the drops. Tootling along on the drops or chasing down roadies on carbon fibre superbikes, they're just great. Single speed only, so not so good if you've got a big hill.

Have you thought about a cross bike? Sounds as though you're pretty sold on hub gears, though

8 speed langster would be perfect! even 3 speed would do..

I have looked at cross bikes actually as they would be great for hacking around the park after work. they seem quite pricey though? not a deal breaker but would rather have something that looked ace if I was to splash the cash...ahem...cannondale...

why do dale's get so much stick? too poncey? form over function?
