Modern cleaning methods

Taking my bike apart over the last few days after it had been in the possession of a cousin who did not know what oil and a spanner looks like, or for that matter, a pump. So seeing as I need the bike for college, I had to make sure everything was ok, so I took it all apart and starting to look around for something to degrease the thing, but as usual, not a lot around, it gets used rapidly with the machines I have in my flat (two outboard motors in bits at the moment).

So, what to do, then the idea came, I have an ultrasound tank and a manky bottle of white spirit, I know, clean the components with ultrasound, it did a fab job, so I thought I would share that method here.

The ultrasound tanks , well the one I have got is an ebay cheapie, about twenty quid, it gets used for everything, such an effective way of cleaning it is.

My Dad was the design engineer and one of the team that first developed the technology behind ultrasonic cleaning. Proud son.

Bought an ultrasonic cleaner from Maplins about a year ago, perfect for chains, cassettes, jockey wheels, mech's....

Excellent parts cleaner, just turn it on, put the kettle on have a cuppa whilst the cleaner does all the hard work 8)

I got one from the machine shop I worked at... Just needed a new on/off switch.. I use a lot of dishwasher or laundry soap(Tide being my favorite) I got it for VW carbs and gun parts, but I use it for everything...

Where i work we have a quite large hot washer. It uses hot water to blast bits. Twenty mins in that and a chain is completely degeased. Brill and does not use any nasty chemicals.
