Are they really modern?

And what is the best general all-round one in your opinion? Say for London Urban, towpaths, and trips of up to 15 miles?

I think you could call them retro. Still, as cool as they ever were, and better than pretty much all the other folders unless you count very, very expensive ones.

For towpaths you won't need a lot of gears and it might get muddy, so a Sturmey AW version or a singlespeed is the way to go. Add the SON dynamo if you're riding at night.

Living in an urban wilderness, where the largest hills only lead to the next level in the car park, my Langster hasn't let me down yet. I'm even racing on it at the weekend.

So, single speed is the way to go

I have a Brompton M3, 3 speed SA hub and mudguards. Cracking bike for folding up and chucking on the train. I know people do but I wouldn't like to ride one 15 miles and certainly not on a tow path on mine. As the wheels are so small they don't handle bumps/holes well, think skateboard hitting a stone on the pavement.

Crap saddles - get something proper to replace the original. Mickey mouse chainsets and brake levers let them down.
