Modern Bike Help Needed

I have a mate who wants to buy his first road bike. His budget is around £600. He has ridden offroad for many years and has a couple of modern Canondales.
He is finding the true path late (ish) in life as he is 66 I don't think anything super stretched is going to be suitable. I have found:

and thought if the shop perhaps fitted a shorter stem could be ideal.
Is that shop Halfords? Does anyone have any other ideas?

All I know is the choice at that price bracket seem pretty big and that the Boardman from Halfords is good VFM.

Focus from Wiggle seem good value also?

I was playing with the carbon one not that long ago and it seemed nice , buyer was tiny so no riding around the shop for me .
