metal BRASS TRAVEL CHIPS GT STS/LTS instead of the nylons?

I saw those too... I don't think it's the flexy nature of the nylon that matters, but the wear and friction characteristics. With brass chips, you're going to wear down the softer aluminum trunnion... which is much harder to find and much costlier to replace. In a pinch and with a little skill, one could fashion new chips out of nylon, teflon, phenolic resin, whatever... Making a new trunnion would be impossible for anyone who lacks metalworking machinery and skills.

Definitely not an improvement, IMO.
