Mercian Canyon project

Re:

This is going to be a cool build, and the stem is a very cool addition.

Is it perhaps the way the picture is taken, or is the top tube running downhill...?

I second that.

Very cool build. Very much like an early Potts.

I thought the geometry looked a bit weird but its probably just the photo.

Update:

decided on Dia Compe Gran Compe brake levers, best (imho) levers of that era with return springs and dia compe 986 cantis to match, obscure other parts that I've enjoyed sourcing like the velox rubber bar plugs to (hopefully) protect the top tube from those swinging bars.

With gear shifters I've got a pair of old Suntour butterfly command shifters in the post, I've never tried them before but my choice was limited as though I like the look of Suntour bar end shifters the ones I've had on old touring bikes in the past hit my knees, plus extra bar extension problems with the Spesh RM2's...

The old Phil wood/araya wheels pictured I got from the forum a while back, they're old and rusty but still true (130 rear also a plus point) and until I find something else that I like they're sticking around, the only thing is that they've got a bl**dy bmx freewheel stuck on them, I have a remover but it doesn't fit over the phil axel, I haven't yet worked out how to remove that axel easily so I tried to glue the cog to the freewheel body so I could use a chain whip to remove it - no joy - glue not strong enough, now I think I'm gonna weld it together so I can use the chainwhip, or drill our my removal tool, not sure yet.

hopefully next post will have tyres and the wheels both sorted!

Re:

All my Phil Wood hubs are newer but you just remove the bolts and unscrew the axles with a 6mm(?) Allen key. There's a recessed Allen head within each side of the axle.

It's shaping up to be a stunner by the way!

cheers for the tip, no recessed allen heads on the phil model I have unfortunately, it's a hollow axel with long allen headed bolts (just short of 2 1/2") that screw in

Re: Mercian Canyon project another minor update

I found this saddle cheap on ebay, the seller had managed to photograph it out of focus in a badly lit room (actually not that worse than my photographic skills  ), the side logo has long gone but otherwise I was pleasantly surprised at the condition :)

More pics at jaunty angles coming up, Liking these IRC Mythos a lot! Again cheap, 30% used and only managed to get the front tyre - rear is a different model and in the post but at least it's semi shod.

The Suntour Command shifters also came in the post the other day, pity there aren't more of these around - excellent quality, and seem to fit my hand nicely, looking forward to trying them out!

List of things to do to get this up and running:

Paint stem - probably silver
Remove drive side cranks which are proving a little tricky as threads are shot
get that bl**dy freewheel off!

Lots of staring at bike in meanwhile :xmas-cool:
