i was looking at 190e's before i bought my w124 e320

apart from poverty spec trim levels, and not much choice in engines get a good one and you wont regret it. great cars.

look for an auto if you can, old merc auto box's are legendary.

I am so happy with my e320 but a 190e 2.3-16 or 2.5-16 might not be too far away...

dont expect great mpg (even with the diesels...)but when you car costs peanuts it doesnt really matter when compared to the depreciation of a new car doing 50mpg.

Like LGF says, MB support is great.

There are a few problems, but they are well known common problems, you dont have to be Sherlock to figure them out and you dont need mega money to fix them.

Here is a wealth of knowledge www.mbclub.co.uk

and here is what £830 gets you if you fancy a C124 instead..

This was when Merc's looked nice IMO. They look awful now. Like Ssangyongs.

The new E class is so over designed they've bothered every surface apparently for the sake of it. and such incoherant design.

Like 190's. And that S that LGF mentions. They were really simple and tasteful.

Slight thread hijack since we've drifted towards W124s ... The B2 piston went on my W126 auto (google it relatively common problem, same issue in W124 since it used 722.x tranny too) - interesting drive home that day! Having said that, replacement part wasn't too expensive, and it was relatively easy to replace on the W126 - possibly trickier on the W124 though due to less space.

Also, if there is flare (or slip) when auto transmission shifts up from 2nd to 3rd, it might be fixable by getting and fitting a replacement K1 accumulator spring kit - cheap and easy fix.

im sure you've just cursed my box

classic cars and one of my faves.

2.6 diesel is great and had a 2.3-16v 'cossie' which was awesome and i can't wait to get one again .Dogleg box felt natural and loved everything about it. Will get a pic up.

But i think you should avoid the 16v versions and go for the standard ones as they will be cheaper and possibly less hassle as no doubt they would have been thrashed in the past etc...

Either way, good choice as the older mercs are the best. Always fancied a w124 or even better a fintail.

I would have thought a 600 Grosse would be more up your street HB.
