Following on from my 'buying a banger' thread, her in doors has it that she would like a 190E.
Any good? Any experiences? Weaknesses?
Ta, Carl

Solid, but a long way from being sporty (apart from the Cossie!). Manuals are a bit cr@p anyway... Look for rust on the jacking points, in the boot, well everywhere really - they're not that bad but that's got to be your main issue!

i love 190's!

know nothing about them but they are very comfortable

the 190 was developed after the W126 S class with the same approach, to make the ultimate Mercedes family saloon.

They were way ahead of their time for driving (we are talking 1983 here) and they are built like nothing else (other than another Mercedes). There are rusty ones but for every rusty one there are 2 more cosseted minty examples all for less than a grand.

My mates 1990 LPG 2.0 is still running around at 280,000 miles and hardly ever washed....

They are very good, my personal fave is the non turbo 2.5 5 cyl diesel (Europe got the TD, the Brits were scared of 'em) as they sound great and are reasonable on fuel.

The good bit about older Mercs is that Mercedes are happy to look after you with spare parts. Everything was still available for my 1983 500SEC including a new engine (£14,995) if I wanted one...

There are loads of patent parts.

They can be cramped if you are a larger load.

sportline is lower supension - 16" Merc alloys are VERY light and shouldnt be replaced for crappy aftermarket jobbies.

2.0 diesel slower than fermenting cheese

wild and wacky interior colours.

dusty switchgear usually just needs a clean if things like leccy windows stop working or the plugs need re seating - the newest 190 is now 17 years old...

avoid anything smoky

My friend got one a few years back that looked to be in vgc. It blew up within a few months. He might just have been unlucky I guess.

Oh, he really liked it when it worked. 8)

cant remember if the 190 has a steering box - loose steering is fixed by a simple reverse thread nut which causes many an E class to fail MOTs.
