how effective are they in general?

I accept that hydraulic will be better (probably), but are the mech ones ok?

Compared to, say, V-brakes?

If set up correctly and with decent pads, they are perfectly acceptable and are easier to faff with than hydraulics.

I'll get this in before I get beat over the head with a spoon

Good news on the brakes though.. I don't have a requirement for vast stopping power and also don't really fancy having to mess with brake fluid..

The Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes are easily as good as any hydraulic with the same disc size.

Only prob is the cables get much in them like any cables and work less well over time as the friction builds / need adjustment as cable stretches etc.

Brilliant.. thanks chaps..

Got a Shimano one coming for a front only setup using that wheel I'm getting from you lgf.. I think
