Mechanical disc brakes

I'll keep 'em peeled for some bargaintastic ones ;)

This Shimano one only cost me £12 so it'll do for now 8)

**edited to remove the daft comment about levers  **

+1 for the BB7's but only if used with Avid levers.
I used my bb7 with an XTR lever and it was Ok ish.Changed to a cheap set of Avids. and that really sharpened them up.

OK so not as good as my Hope M4's but at a fraction of the cost. And the BB7's do need a tweak every so often.

I run a BB7 on a 160mm rotoe on the front of the karakoran with a XTR V on the back. The BB7 pi$$es on teh V brake, wet or dry

New full set of BB7's £110 from crc. . or £101 (including rotors) from Hong Kong . . .
Or wait a while for a used set to turn up on the bay of E and save myself £40 ;)

Is there anything to choose between BB7's and their cheaper bredren BB5's??

I have some Avid levers so that's cool...

The cheap ones are worse than awful . But they aren't too bad once you are willing to spend a few quid on a nicer caliper , use a good quality ( ie straight ) disc and your fave v lever will be fine . I bet a nokon cable would be worthwhile .

I know a lot of those iditaride riders use a cable disc as apparently hydraulics don't like the cold very much . I imagine it's a case of cracked alloy parts and not the fluid freezing . So you get some bragging rights there .

The Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes are easily as good as any hydraulic with the same disc size.

Ground control to Major Tom
I agree BB7's are the best mechanical brake out there, but lets not get carried away

I will never be hurtling anywhere at sufficient speed to require anything major, I only need effective and aesthetically charming ;)

I can agree with that 8)

I use BB7 with BOX levers and they work great .

major flaw compared to hydraulic brakes is that you need to manually adjust the pads when they wear off .

next upgrade are the new rotors .

Had to Google BOX levers and, shock! horror!, guess where it took me. . .

HERE!!...

Those are some lovely levers.. real wish-list material 8)
