I use either avon or jungle formula. They get annoying little blighters at times. The place I go trout/pike fishing gets really bad through the summer, as does the place I work weekends at. It can really put you off a place if you don't have the proper protection.
Last year me and the mrs decided to go to glentrool camping for the night(even though it aint that far away we just fancied a drink and giggle in the great outdoors). The midgies ate her alive and really put her off camping in the woods and away from the sea which is the kind of place we'd usually camp. She now makes sure if ever we go camping her avon's with her.

Find someone the Midges consider top grade steak and stay close to them.
Don't hang about with me, I'm cheapo sausages, they only bite me when they are desperate
Also quite good is even when bit my skin does not react too badly, thats highland and west coast blood for you ie you get used to them over the generations.
In extreme cases DEET based sprays etc are serious deterants.

The most effective reppelent is Avons Skin so soft. I spend most of my time outdoors and this is the best stuff yet. Though nothing is 100% effective.
Only the woodland fresh scented one non of the others
stay away from water source (scotland pretty impossible ) or stay in the snow line (Pretty impossible again)
