Mavic X517

I have this black Mavic X517 32h (CD?) that I would like to swap for a 32h 217, 517, 519 or 618 that isn't black.

I bought it as a CD (which it may be, judging from the surface), assuming it was the XTR CD colour. It's by no means new and it has some minor blemishes as shown, but it is straight and it has been used on a disc wheel, so the braking surface is unused. The blemishes won't have any practical effect and I'd be perfectly happy to build it if I needed a black wheel, but unfortunetely I don't.

Anyone up for a swap?

Anthony, it's not a CD, it's black. But it looks like it's a Ceramic to me, as in grey CD wall. The black non ceramic ones have a shiny silver brake surface.

?

Thanks Gus. I haven't had a black 517, but I too thought they had a silver braking surface. This picture is of a 'CD Ceramic', this black rim and an NOS XTR-coloured CD. The ceramic surface certainly seems rougher than the other two.

Funnily enough, the ceramic one is marked CD but the one that's definitely a CD isn't marked CD. To me, the CD name meant it had a hard-anodised braking surface that was supposed to be slightly better than polished alloy, but making nothing like as much of a difference as ceramic. So I don't understand why the ceramic one is marked CD. Same XTR colour as the CD though!

black normal had silver brake surface. just plain alloy.

black ceramic had the grey ceramic coating on the brake surface.

cd's had grey rim/ brake surface (for a while)

cd ceramics had the same grey brake surface (which is slightly darker than the cd grey of the rim itself.

X717 ceramics only came in black, although i have heard rumour (although not seen them) of some silver ones. Def no CD grey ones though. dropped after 517's.

You can trust me, i'm a little bit rainman.

:D

Hi Wutangled.

I realize this is not the question section but while we are discussing rims and you do seem too be very knowledgeable about it.

I have on a bike a set of Mavic D521 SUP rims which are grey with either a silver or grey breaking surface. It is difficult too tell as the back and front look different.

Are these rims any different from others and should I be using standard brake blocks?

Thank you
