Mavic wheel help !

Hi everyone,
First post on this forum but always reading it when i get 5 minutes, could do with some advice please.
I have a '95 Klein Pulse which i have recently rescued from the shed and started using again - so glad i did !
I treated it to a set of mavic crosslink wheels which i found on ebay and these have been fine... until today.....
Jumped on the bike to go and buy the sunday papers and nearly knocked my teeth out on the handlebars when i started pedaling, there was a good 1/2 crank revolution before i got any drive, the problem seems quite intermittent but its certainly enough to be frustrating, basically if i pedal backwards say 3/4 crank turn whilst freewheeling then go to pedal forwards, there is 3/4 crank turn of play.... does that make sense???

so, i am guessing the hub is knackered but are these mavic hubs servicable, can i change for any other hub as i really like the rims.???

your advise would be much appreciated guys

sounds like if freewheel is gone .

take it apart first and try to regrease it .

It is probably the freewheel that is dead. The Mavic part number is M40319, but that part number is no longer available from Mavic. Maybe you can find it somewhere in an older shop who carried Mavic wheels back then?

Otherwise, you can build new wheels on your old rims. Only probelm will be to find 20 hole rims...

...or even 20 hole hubs

Royce will do you hubs in pretty much any drilling you want if you ask them nicely. Ultralight front in 20 hole is available as standard at £115, rear cassette hub for £169.

Something off the shelf will be cheaper, but nothing like as pimpy...

Did this wheel use the same freehub as the Crossmax? I think so but it's been so long?


Anyway, back in the day, I used a few pairs of Crossmax, one of the recurring problems I had with heavy use is as you described, it was usually either a spring bust or siezed pawl.

I used to retrofit campag freehub pawl springs to mine, and use a light grease such as pace fork grease for lube, it's a three spring/pawl system and easy to do if you take care.
