Mavic MA40, 231cd or 261cd?

231 & 261 description

But 261 (26mm width) are the bigger wider version of 231 (23mm width) hence the name iirc.

but check specs here

MA40 I'm unsure of but I think is designed for 'road' use really. See if I can find anything..

here http://www.bikepro.com/products/rims/mavicroad.html but if it was available in 26" it would just be the same

CD is just the hard anodising of them that gives a crap breaking surface, but wears away eventually though ;)

Before there were race-y, thin mountain bike rims, Keith Bontrager got into the business of getting meatier road rims, cutting them down and re-rolling them. Two of the most common Bonty roll-downs were the Mavic MA-2 (silver) and MA-40 (hard ano) rims. Soon Mavic got into the act and started rolling their own.

Here is an MA-2

The only diff with an MA-40 is that it would be ano.

If it's a '95 bike the earlier Mavic 231/261's will be a shade too early...it is true that the width is the difference as others have already pointed out. Best option would be something like 231 SUP's a bit later, but joined differently to make a better braking and stronger rim... SUP is some french something or other to do with this

If you haven't seen it the mombat timeline is good for dating some bits and pieces http://www.mombat.org/Timeline.htm#1995

Also, avoid MA-40's like the plague....they're derived from the road rim with the same model name - i.e super narrow - and anybody who has removed a steel beaded tyre will know what I mean there

You are mistaken with respect to timing. The 231 is the period correct rim for 1995. The SUP was introduced in 1996.
