Just bought an old Mavic front mech fitted onto a trimble .

Can you fit to another frame ( conventional top pull ) .

there is nowhere on the mech to attach the cable . it goes through the mech but no bolt to tighen it .

The way I understand it is : the outer cable pushes the mech , and the cable is attached to the frame ??

am I correct ?

Yes, absolutely right. Same as the trek 8900 or yetis BITD, the cable would bolt to the frame.

thanks , could work indeed .

another question , do I need to run full lengh outer ?

No, as long as you have a stop on the frame. You'll have to cut the outer cable to length with the derailleur in the big ring position though and find some way to tidy up the bend that will be produced in the outer as the mech swings to the granny ring position. 8)

it is a normal frame so there must a stop somewhere along .

in which position does the shifter have to be when you tighen the cable ?
big ring or granny ?

Doesn't matter as long as it is in the corresponding position as the derailleur. Probably easier to tighten the cable in the granny ring position though. Just make sure you have pre-cut the outer with the mech in the big ring position!

any close up pic of one mounted wich is not full lenght .

sorry chaps , really being thick here , but dont want to cut outer before being sure it is going to work .

No can do mate! But trust me: set the derailleur (I dare not call it a 'mech', being Mavic! ) to the big ring position, then cut a piece of outer cable to fit smoothly between the rearward cable stop and the derailleur. That way, when the derailleur arm swings back to the granny ring position, it will cause some 'sag' in the cable outer. Otherwise (if you cut the cable outer in the granny ring position) the derailleur arm would try to stretch the outer cable, simply not move at all, or damage the shifter!
In other words, leave enough sag in the outer cable for the derailleur to move and do its business! (Why didn't I just say that in the first place!)
Any clearer? :P
