Mavic D521 wheelset on XTR *** NOW SOLD ***

GS7A

Dirt Disciple
Okay Guys, these wheels aren't cheap, but all I am doing is recovering my costs. The build by Eighteen Bikes in Hope, Derbyshire cost £120 alone! All components used are ether New or New Old Stock (NOS) and are getting hard to find, as you are all aware :0)

I am asking for £450 and would prefer it if they where collected from Sandbach in Cheshire with Cash on Collection, or I will ship at cost with a PayPal "Gift" payment.

Components:

Hubs: Shimano XTR HB-M950 32 Spoke

Rear - 8/9-Speed Compatible, Titanium Axle, Titanium FH Body, and Stainless Steel Ball Bearings. Shimano XTR QR Skewer.

Front - Stainless Steel Ball Bearings, Double Contact Seals, Oversized Aluminum Axil. Shimano XTR QR Skewer.

Rims: - Mavic D521
Front & Rear - 26” S.U.P, UB Control, 28mm wide, 22.1mm tall, 32 spoke, silver.

Spokes: Sapim Race Double butted.
Front & Rear - Silver brass spoke nipples, 32 spoke, 3 cross build.

Inner tubes: Continental MTB 26" x 1.75 - 2.5 with Presta valve.

Rim Tape: Continental Easy Tape Rim Strip 20 x 599 - 26"

Tyres - front & Rear: Retro - Ritchey 26x2.0 Racing.K, Force 1.9, World Championship Series – Special Low Density Compound, Kevlar Bead, with light skin side walls.

Cassette: Shimano XTR Titanium CS-M970 9-Speed Cassette 12-34.

*The Cassette is not strictly speaking true to the retro build period, however it is a new high-end component that is fully compatible with the period Shimano M952 9 speed group set.

I was going to use the wheels on a retro bike build project, however a change in personal circumstances renders this no longer an option, hence the reluctant sale.

I know we aren't supposed to comment on price, but I think I need to here.

I understand you paid a lot of money for these wheels, and they do look very very nice indeed. However I think it'd be very hard to even get close to your money back on these.

Why? The XTR hubs are lush, no doubt about it, but they are later models than the M900 that command the big money. The D521 rims were downhill rims, so don't really suit the racy lightweight hubs or tyres. So it's a bit of a combination people wouldn't normally go for if paying big money.

You'll get more if you split the tyres and cassette from the wheels themselves.

Even though you bought them as NOS, they aren't NOS any more so that does reduce the price a bit from what you paid initially.

And you have to offer postage, or your market is tiny, it really is. It isn't hard to pack them well into a bike box, seperating them with some thick cardboard (or even better getting a box that wheels were shipped in in the first place). Take them to post office and £15-20 max to send them registered post.

I would really like you to get your money back, especially as I can see it's a reluctant sale, but if you have to sell them it will help if you are a bit more realistic about their value to someone else, which unfortunately is a lot less than what you paid for them. :(

EDIT - this retro business can get expensive if you aren't careful, and this is why!!

Hi Rob, many thanks for your feedback, much appreciated and probably realistic unfortunately :( What do you believe would be a reasonable price?

The wheels need to go so I would be open to sensible offers, and will post them as stated in my thread. The reason for my reluctance to ship is that I am laid up having snapped my quadriceps tendon just before Christmas!

Would love the tyres if you are willing to split? Plus I can pick them up as I am not to far away. Hope the injury heals quickly.

Regarding what price to put on the items there is a thread in the MTB Chat forum.

Its not often updated with prices so a search of previous classified ads is probably best.

Having bought the same items as your wheel build recently I paid:

£100 for the hubs (NOS) M950
£50 for NOS rims (D521 32H Silver) Pair
£40 DT Comp spokes.

I also bought a set of VGC M950 hubs on X517 rims, comp spokes for £100.

Skewers and cassette often fetch VG prices on their own.

So for yours I would suggest:

£220 for the wheels
£50 for the tyres
£60 for the cassette
£40 for the skewers

So not a million miles out from your original price.

Hope this helps.

Based on the feedback and good advice that I have received from a number of members on the forum, it is clear that I have been a tad over optimistic thinking that I can recover the actual cost of building the wheel set.

Given this, and the suggested selling prices for the individual components that I have received, I am reducing the asking price to £360 delivered.

If there are no takers in the next few days at the revised price, I will list the individual components on the forum next week.

Cheers all.
