You know, weddings only happen once (that's the theory anyway) and its his day, even if an outfit does cost £50-£100, thats absolutely nothing compared to what the groom will have had to spend out.

Just the meal and booze at the wedding breakfast and food in the evening is likely to cost close to £50 per head.

Because of friends weddings over the past couple of years I've had to travel to Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland and Holland I've spent hundreds on dresses for my wife and a fair few quid on penguin suits for myself, not to mention the 'Country House' weddings in the UK with the £200 per night hotel bills.

During all of the above, I happily spent the money knowing that I was going to spend time with my very close friends, celebrating a very special event.

My biggest objection would be wearing a kilt I hadn't been to get properly fitted for. If it's too big you'll look like a tartan shuttlecock, if too small you'll look like a public schoolgirl.

I invested in a made to measure kilt about 20 years ago and it's more than paid for itself several times over.

At all of my mates weddings where I've been part of the "wedding party" they have paid for the suit. That's not to say I wouldn't have paid for it myself.

However, if you're a good enough mate to be his best man - why are you even quibbling about £50 for the hire? Admittedly it should have been clear up front, but this is the sort of silly argument that costs friendships.

Mark - quibbling over £50 might not be an issue for some but can be for others, BvT perhaps you could explain your situation to him and ask him to sub you till you can pay it.
