Benandemu and legrandefromage, I was just saying to check size due to my experience of the 3 Marin bikes and 1 frame that we have. They have different sizes of shock lengths. Hadn't realised that shock length is dependent on the frame type not it's size. Won't make that error again. Just measured all of them, the 16" Mount Vision does indeed have 165mm, the 17.5" Wild Cat Trail has a 200mm, the 17.5" Wolf Ridge has a 185mm, and the other 16" Wolf Ridge frame also has a 185mm.

Benandemu, I've quoted your post from this thread, viewtopic.php?f=21&t=291120&start=10 as it has the info about which of the frames has which size of shock.

"Wolf Ridge and Attack Trail both used a 185mm shock. They aren't unavailable in an air shock upgrade, but they're thin on the ground. Keep searching '185mm shock' on eBay, and they do turn up. The 190mm will touch the frame! They also use the same rear swingarm length as the Mount Vision.

The B-17 and Wildcat Trail use a 200mm shock.

The Mount Vision and Rift Zone use a 165mm shock."

As you mention the swing-arm in your post could you give any info on the differences? I ask because I thought they were all the same dimensionally but have found one of the ones on the Marins we have is a bit longer than the others. I know this is a can of worms due to there being several different types due to upgrades/better designs and whether they are disc or V-brakes. The longer one has the Marin type disc mounting, the lump of aluminium one, think it came off the Wild Cat Trail.

There are quite a few swing arm types and differences. They are all interchangeable with any model frame as long as you have the appropriate shock for that frame.
The first type used on the 1997 Mount Vision was V brake only, and had a box section with a round tube support. This was later replaced under warranty for many owners as they were prone to cracking.
The update was a smaller box section that was better structured and supported (1998 model). This included an IS disc tab welded to the frame. The following year saw some advances with lowering the weight and using a bolt-on adapter for the disc tab. The last single pivot design was used on the monocoque frames, and that was a monocoque rear arm in a beefier section. This also used the bolt on adapter for the dish tab, yet still retained the canti mounts for V brakes.
If we look at the longer travel models, they used a beefier swing arm, some with disc tabs and some without. It's getting cloudy here because Marin were making so many models and changing names around! Some models were simply called FRS. Anyway, the B-17 and Wildcat Trail used a longer rear swing arm which would lengthen the wheelbase and increase stability when descending. The earlier version used an odd direct disc mount that worked in conjunction with an adapter and exclusively a Hope C2 caliper!! The version just after this used a welded IS disc tab. This is the version I chose for my DH FRS (basically a B-17) as it's much more user friendly. This swing arm did eventually get the upgrade to a bolt on disc tab from Marin, but you rarely come across them.
Lastly, they had a downhill race frame that used two versions of a very beefy box section and machined out bridges. These look lovely, and are pretty rare as they were only fitted on 10 inch rear travel frames. Yikes! One of them featured an adjustable mount so that you alter the level of travel. This was filtered down to the next year longer travel bikes and became known as TARA.

The swing-arm on my daughter's Mount Vision FRS has an I.S. disc mount, small box section arm (it's a parts bin special) but the other 3 all have the larger section (approx 2"x1"???), 2 have I.S. mounts and the other bare frame (Wolf Ridge) has the longer one off the Wild Cat Trail, with the Marin mount for the special Hope caliper. With a 160mm disc, making an adaptor is problematic for a Hope M4 caliper but 180mm gives more room to fit everything together.

My '98 mount vision (same as one for this topic) doesn't have a disc mount V-Only but of course the box section style, the disc mount must have come on the '99s

I swapped my Shockworx spring for a 165mm Fox and it halfed the weight of the bike :lol: ... incredible.

Slightly exaggerated maybe, but you get my drift... heavy spring for fresh air .. no brainer.
