seem to remember it was 3 temp bans i think, some were early enough that he wasn't on peoples radar.

what kept him from being banned permanently previously was that he did contribute but at some point the negative out weighed the positive.

at which point the lines are drawn between the people who did and didn't get on with him. .

Not at all.. there are a very small number (literally, 1 or (perhaps) 2) folk on this site who I ignore wholesale and have no intention or desire to speak to/meet either on here or in the real world and I don't think any of them are anti-Scott...

Problems don't decrease with an increase in membership. Quite the opposite, normally.

i meant that in that some defend and some don't like as oposed to a declaration of internet forum war!

well if upsetting a balance is to constantly quote 'right wing' views (really offensive apparently) then so be it. I dont remember any macho youthfullness, and isnt he over 30?
I dont think he had an agenda as such, I think he is suffering because more people just didnt like his opinions, and the fact he stuck up for himself.
Maybe I can relate to that, hence my sympathy

Think back to your school days, and the annoying kid/kids in the class.
Sure, they got on your nerves, sure, they were disruptive, and yes, on occasion you wished you could pop a bunch of fives on thier nose.
But when they got taken away from your lesson or expelled, school did become a bit less interesting, and funny.

However, a lot a second chances were offered so there is an air of inevitability to this.
Thats enough from me.
Ce la vie.

Firstly, to suggest that the 'General & Off Topic Section' is a place where effectively anything goes is the decision of the site owner and not the forum users.

I am of the opinion that there are rules, guidelines and etiquette which should be adhered to for the benefit of the Retrobike forum and the Retrobike community as a whole.
These should be respected, otherwise this forum could easily become a place where offensive behaviour, opinions and people become the norm rather than the minority.
While I am a firm advocate for freedom of speech, I am a greater advocate of respect.

Alot of time and discussion takes place on well moderated forums like Retrobike, and I know that decisions aren't taken lightly.

In terms of Marin Man:
Clearly Scott had already had several chances to get his act together, with temporary bans and warnings based on lesser infringements. He had been cut plenty of slack, but ultimately demonstrated a fundamental lack of respect for the forum rules and the Retrobike community as a whole.
To compound that, racist comments and abusive PMs show that his behaviour can't really be tolerated.

It's also true that some members, especially Marin Man had a reputation for repeatedly posting on threads, without actually adding much to that thread other than smilies and 'banter'.
For many this had the effect of devaluing the whole thread, and marking it as one to be avoided. I'm not saying that all MMs posts were like this, he did produce some informative and helpful threads.

So perhaps it's true that for some Marin Man had developed a reputation as someone who offered help, assistance and karma parts.
The reason he has made friends is probably partly due to this.
But he could also be very irritating, not always on purpose but sometimes he did seem to enjoy his notoriety.

But behind his public forum persona, his 'friends' probably had no idea as to how nasty he could be.
His advocates will of course continue to defend MM based on the way they perceived him, whilst other will criticise based on their perceptions.

Ultimately though, the decision to ban Scott was based on clear infringements of the rules, which if left unchecked would be to the detriment of every member.

Is this still going?

I'm not sure what is being added now - those who found Scott a good guy will continue to do so and fair enough, speak as you find. However that does not detract from the reasons behind his permanent ban from Retrobike and as John has already posted, that isn't going to be revoked. And goodness only knows what relevance to what is posted on other cycling forums has - this is Retrobike and we, all of us, are responsible for what is posted here. And, as before, I've no clue what relevance discussion on immigration to the UK and similar topics has on a cycling forum but I doubt it actively encourages people to join or participate.

Time to call time on this thread I think but as a final point it might be worth referring to the guidelines on posting in General Chat http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=64836 before returning to the usual business of discussing how to set up cantis and whether 53mm can be considered long travel.
