Manitou 2 strip down - help needed!!

Hi guys,

Couldn't find a 'Tech' section on, so hope this is OK here - Mods feel free to move it!

I've been stripping these down as they were seized. I have another set that almost work but in need of servicing & new elastomers but as I'm not sure how they worked I thought I practice on these...

I got the legs apart, and got this far:

And this is the bit that I'm stuck on:

But how do I remove the metal 'slider' (that the elastomers are on) from the stantion?!

Can anybody shed any light for me before I lose patience, put them in a vice, and wreck 'em?!

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Hmmmm... I seem to remember needing a very long 5mm allen wrench to remove the bolt from inside the leg, isn't it threaded into the compression adjuster at the bottom? Once you get the adjuster off, the bolt will slide out.

Sorry I don't have more specific info, I haven't had a set apart in a little while.

Thank You ....Thank you ... Thank you

After hours of head scratching deluded into thinking I could out think the problem in hand I decided to look on line at RB and blow me down a guy with the similar problem... same frustrations! "how the hell do you get them fully apart"

Thanks guys you've save an almost mint set of Manitou 2's from a beating
One click on the link to a service manual and all is now well in my world.

Foulishly I started by removing the allen bolt at the bottom ala RS Judy MK1 and my MK1 Pace offering.

Now I can get on and replace the worn out elastomers with these babies

Thanks once again guys top marks !!!

you need a 5mm allan key to get down to the stanchion. one from a socket set and some extensions and ratchet will do it the hold the bottom outer part on the two flats with a spanner that will fit. i think its 8mm. that's the nut that holds the lot together.. Also get a bit of wd40 on there to help things out as I remember the bolts are steel and the collar at the bottom is alu.

Leave the preload adjusters inside the stanchions, thet aren't specifically intended to withdraw. You'll have removed them with the 3mm key in the countersunk bolt, and pulled off the adjuster wheel. That little lot stays put in the slider, just use the long 5mm key to with draw the assembly to change the elastomers.
Once the elastomer stack is removed, if you want to strip the adjusters, that is then is the time to do it. You've kind of got two operations goig on simultaneously here. . . .
