Mains gas vs heating oil

Looks like our oil tank is starting to leak so we contacted the landlord who asked our thoughts on going over to gas instead..

Now I know that heating oil has, for about the past 8 years or so, been the cheapest wotsit.. but I don't think that's the case any more.

We've told her that we'll go along with what she wants (it is her house, after all, and it's nice to be asked rather than told) but does anyone have any thoughts on the pro's/cons??

The way we're thinking is that we get to pay monthly, may get a discount for getting leccy and gas from the same provider, have an energy efficient combi-boiler installed and lose the bloody great tank in the garden..

Pro's?? It might be a few quid cheaper in the long term but not sure there'll be that much in it..

Pro's- spreads the cost- monthly/quarterly gas bills instead of huge tank refill in one go.

Also, as happened to many folks last winter, ye use a lot of oil in a big freeze, and if the tankers are snowbound, yer screwed......... :P

...and the theiving scum aren't going to nick your mains gas like they can with oil.

Really? It's been mental expensive for years and only getting more so. If there's gas available, go gas.

Just believing the hype (read it somewhere online late last year)... :?

The price thing is getting a bit daft though..

We spent £270 on 500litres on the 6th December last year.. not so bad, at the time..
The tank is just at the level where we should think about ordering again (which is why we checked it over and discovered it looks like it's leaking) but the prices, despite the decent weather, indicate that it'll cost around £320 this time round..

Just hoping the landlord will get her butt in gear and do the switch before we run out of oil...
[Me Too]It's a race against time![/Me Too]..

How easy is it to get a gas pipe to the property? I've seen it cost in the order of hundreds of thousands (not the ice cream topping). Your landlord will have to pay for that capital cost.

Most of the houses in the street run mains gas.. I think all the pipework is there ready to rock'n'roll...

Cost wise it always used to be

Mains gas - cheapest
Oil
LPG
Bottled gas - most expensive

Nowadays I think LPG is probably cheaper than oil but main gas is still the cheapest overall. The boilers are also much cheaper and if you have a combi boiler you'll notice your water will heat up slightly quicker. I would choose mains gas if I had the choice.

cant comment as ive only ever used mains gas
but you can also have cash prepayment card with gas too :?
