Magura hs33 mix and match advice

Over the years I've had so many of these brakes, race lines, tomacs, other variations but I've never actually fitted a set to a build for various reasons.

I want to correct that.

I have in the stash a set of tomacs in red and a set of red hs33s and some spare bits.

I'm looking to make the best cosmetic set of brakes for the tomac adorned levers and a decent set for the plain red levers.

It should be a simple plan right. Pick the best cosmetic slaves for the tomacs and likewise for the other set, taking into account the working condition too.

Is there any advice on servicing the pistons anyone can share as I may as well give them a looking at.

Mount wise, I'd like to make sure I use the correct mounts for the sets, is there a specific mount for each? I have to admit I've mixed them up. Not sure which goes with what anymore.

Also after opinions on the boosters. I've got a mint set of red magura ones as well as a new set of carbon ones. Would it be best to stick the carbons on the tomacs or go with the original red?

Hopefully I have all the bits to make 2 decent sets, I bought a magura tackle box ages ago which I hope has anything I need that I don't have from the buying of the brakes.

@ishaw, any progress on the above? You happen to have any residual parts? Specifically, the red TPA wheels on the Maguras? I am in need of these to complete my HS33s

I'm the same as you Ian, many a set passed through my hands, but never seem to make it onto a bike for whatever reason... Usually the result of abandoned plans and/or someone else's need greater than mine, so happy pass on!

Anyway, I have put some time into this.....

From what I can tell... All brakes regardless of colour, designation and era, run the same slave pistons (rim calipers).

The caliper hasn't changed since first inception (so right back to hydrostop through to current HS11/33) with the only exception being variations in mounting. Mounting is compatible across the board as you would expect being the same caliper, but as time moved on, so did convenience for wheel removal. Early sets had the Venhill yellow alloy bolts, later sets had the evolution mounts with the quick releases, but you can use whatever you see fit.

There are differences within the levers, and this will relate to your Tomac.

First of all they are all interchangeable... so no worries there.

HS11/HS22/HS33 are the same piston size in all levers.

Tomac and Raceline D use a slighly smaller piston to provide more power, often mistaken as an HS22, but this model is actually an HS23

So the takeaway is, no issues. Just more raw power with an HS23 than any other lever..... Is it at the expense of modulation? I couldn't say

Braces? Use whatever you want... Personally I'd go carbon, but go with whatever suits the build

I could be out on a detail (or two) so maybe someone with first hand experience could confirm, but that is the general gist from my time researching.

Hope that helps

*** Just realised you posted that in December last 🤣 Oh well, I've typed it now! If not of use to you, maybe someone, someday ***
