Quite a nice 8-speed/32h/135mm hub, dating from c1995 I believe. I think they used to cost about £130 new (I know the front was £88.50). It’s in very good condition, other than cosmetic damage to the freehub.
There are two things you mustn’t do to these hubs – DON’T fit a cassette of lower than XT standard, as an LX will dig into the freehub body as here (not done by me), and DON’T PUT GREASE IN IT!
Judging from mtbr, they seem to have had a reputation for the hubs seizing up and for poor customer relations. I wonder whether this could be due to people phoning up after greasing their hub and being advised to “read the f**king instructions you t0sspot, where it says whatever you do, don’t put f**king grease in it!!! (slam)”.
According to my knowledgeable and excellent LBS (Rayment Cycles), the bearings will last forever if you put oil in them. If you put grease in there, they’ll seize up. He said it was the same design as a Hope rear hub (sadly I’m too poor to know about Hopes) and he has known people throw them away in disgust after carefully greasing them. They just needed to flush out the grease, replace it with oil and all would have been well.
He also advised me that the damage to the freehub body will have no functional effect provided I filed it flat, which I have done as carefully as I can (and it holds a cassette solidly). He also said that the non-drive side (standard cartridge-type) bearing didn’t need replacing but wasn’t perfect, so I bought a spare just to be on the safe side, and this is included in the sale.
Sorry this is quite long, but it seems that this is a hub that needs to be understood. A good hub if you treat it right, which isn’t difficult.
