M95* series F mechs

Am I right in thinking that the M952 bottom swing F mech didn't have the differential cage mechanism? If not, why not? Surely it was a good thing, and the other M95* series mech all incorporated it?

Or was it not so great, hence The Big S abandoning the idea for future lines of F mech?

Whilst on the subject of M9.. series f/mechs. My 97 Explosif came with a M950 f/mech and alot of the nickle plating has worn off. I am looking for a NOS replacement but I am confused. I am running a 8speed XTR setup with M950 and M951 parts. In my hunt for a new f/mech alot of the ones I have seen advertised state they are for 9speed narrow chains. Did the f/mech sizes change at any point for 9 speed drivechains or do I need to look for M950 only?
