Lugs, but a bit different.

Hi,
I have a question.
I've seen a nice road bike that had the lugs entering the tubes instead of the tubes entering the lugs. The lugs were ally.
I don't know how this type of lugging is called so I find myself incapable of finding more info. I guess some of you guys will probably know all about it since this is retrobike and all!
So how is it called?
Are there any names of (major) builders/brands who did this type of lugging?

Hey Bram,

Did the bike look like the one in the picture? If so, it's probably a 'screwed and glued' construction - the tubes are screwed into the lugs and held in place with glue, basically.
It was an early way of building aluminium frames, but I think it was also done with carbon frames.
Main manufacturers who did this were ALAN, Guerciotti and Vitus, maybe some others.
Advantages were lightness, and the fact the lugs polish up very nice. Disadvantages were (according to some) that the lugs could work loose after a time.
I'm in Belgium too, and these kinds of bike do come up for sale every so often.

Thanks for the reply. I was aware of these alan frames and have seen a few of this type before. The bike I saw had the main tubes stretched over the lugs instead of entering them, so still different from these.

Sounds like some early carbon frames I have sometimes seen. I do like the look of ally lugs and carbon tubrs. Also as the advantage of a repairable bike unlike a monocoque carbon frame.
