Lucky Escape?

Evening all,

I was messing about in the garage last night - pondering a 6sp build with aero bars to mess about on. I checked a few bits and bobs and was looking at a stem which might work with the bars i have. As i pondered i saw a small crack in the stem, bearing in mind i still need glasses, this was a lucky escape.

Have a look -

There are 2 small cranks in the section between the hinges. I dread to think what would have happened if it had broken with me on the bike.

The stem is a 3TTT one but i am not sure of the model.

Yep, those hinged stems are known for cracking at the hinges. I think cinelli also made one like that.

Just to clarify for anyone who has one - there are two cracks - one in the hinged section and one in the stem section.

If the seller wants to give me a refund i am sure we could work something out (pity i have no idea who i bought it from!).

weak link on this stem & also over torqueing doesn't help either
Dare I speak Nob? Yes over tightening of parts is a major problem and some think ''I'll tighten it up that bit more for good luck'' :?

So someone on RB sold you then stem mate ? I bet they knew it was dodgy.

Something like this in such a dangerous condition should not be sold on but given to the local scrap-man.

Ian,

It was sold in good faith (by whom, i cannot remember) but it took a bit of looking to notice.
