logged onto ebay last night and came across a bike at £4 ish quid with a minute left to go that was relatively local,

did my usual lucky 7s i.e £7.77 and ended up winning the bloody thing

I believe its a Raleigh Maverick from mid 80's , i usually detest raleighs but this seemed to have a certain charm, havent picked it up yet though,

anyone got the low down on these things?, it looks pretty basic and low tec,

it also looks a bit like an early stumpy to my ignorant eyes, mixed with a bomber , im pretty sure its an SR BMX stem on it also

so have i bought an anchor or something that will bring a smile?

info appreciated

They make great anchors/ paperweights/ weigh it in/ throw it at an enemy/ give it to Petemcc

but you have to admit it has a certain charm 8) 8)

Retro BSO's dont get any better with age.

Polish it and flog it to some trendy at a car boot sale for £30

Yeah it's a shame it looks nice and it's a survivor, but even for 1985/6 it was hideously out of date

5 gears? Caliper brakes? Steel rims?

It was a con back then, a pretend MTB for parents to buy 'cos they'd heard of the brand

You did however score a bargain, as a town bike it will be heavy, but kind of funky like LGF says, for people that think like that

You can go off people very quickly. That's not the sort of thing you would wish on your worst enemy.

The Maverick 5 (this one) was a bot of a heavy monster MTB-lookalike. The Maverick 15, despite the HTS frame was a properly capable mountain bike. This is from 1985/6 at the latest.

I love Mavericks

My 1st bike was Maverick and had to get one to relive my yoof, Sadly passed I it to Maverick on the forum funnily enough  , even though they are a lump and not high spec the Maverick 15 I had below was cool, lots of fun and rode real nice I did put deerhead mechs on it for some +ve gear changing

I love the original advert too 8)

The 5 was low spec wth sidepull brakes and only 5 gears :(, you could Hot rod it - Weld some disc tabs on it for a laugh as you have no canti mounts would be vey cool that way
