Lower bearing race onto fork steerer....

Hi men.......I'm in danger of damaging it if I hit it any harder with a screwdriver, but I can't get one side to catch without the other side lifting off.......

It's clean and the right size in theory......

I presume a tool exists to sort this?

any tips?

:D

Encountered a similar issue recently that was solved by filing off a few micrometers from the new -heavily painted- forks and slightly heating the (new) crown race.
Still required a good hit with the official tool though..
Guess sometimes it's a smooth, easy fit, sometimes it isn't :)

Re:

As has been said before B & Q supplied my fitting tool. Failing that a donation to your LBS' mechanics tea fund should do the trick.

What size headset is it? Is it definitely the right size crown race?

Yes, everything else has fitted fine using a park tools headset press.......it can only be a few thou too small, but it won't go on.......will try heating it up next I guess..... :D

Re:

You haven't been supplied with a 1" & 26.4mm crown race when you need a 1" & 27.0mm one have you?

Temperature is very much your friend here. Easy enough to heat in boiling water if you don't have an alternative and it should go on with ease.

Boiling water and a spoke to hook it out and flick it over the top of the steerer.
Should be able to press it on with your fingers! (Wear gloves)

Do what Peachy taught me - stick the Steerer in the freezer overnight and heat the crown ring up and then join them up

voilà ! La magnifique mariage d'harmonie
