Another site i visit has just introduced a low memory version for people who browse on their mobiles from work or whilst travelling.

Would it be possible to do that here, or desirable?

It's not the browser, it's the site & how it delivers content. I often access from my PDA, (explains the apalling spelling :) ). It would begood if there was an alternative / lightweight version that was better for the smaller screen size of a PDA. ebay has a fairy simplistic interface, but quitea few car sites I read have similar "mobile" interfaces. Makes GPRS browsing less "click & wait".

Whichever service we're using here for the forum will probably have a mobile rendering / content management option I'd guess. Worth looking in to.

Seconded :)

I've tried browsing on my mobile but it won't let me log in. I'm a techno eejit, what am I not doing??

I'm using opera mini to they the site, it works very well, but that is not the crux of my suggestion. (However it might help the above with their login problem)

what i'm suggesting is that mobile devices are detected and sent a low memory version of the forum, as mobile users are often charged per unit of downloaded data. the other site reduced from 9kb per page view to 1kb. a page on retrobike is typically 5kb.
