Lovely Jack Taylor in M’boro

I keep almost buying this, so for my future me - here’s current reasoning:

It’s a very rare (say c. 5 made?) frame with an almost impossible to replicate paint job. Made by a great framebuilder.
It’s not light or agile. It has geometry that fits its purpose, but beyond fillet brazing isn’t unusual.
It’s almost complete, but new pedals, seatpost, tyres, and better thumbshifters will be needed (thumbies may be original but are the cheapo ones).
Yeah but look at it - finding the cash will be easier than finding another.

K. but once you’ve got it, what will you do with it?
The paint is too sweet to be abused as a tourer /bike packer: or is it?
Maybe just buy it and use it?

Why not?
bcs of the price.
Current benchmark is about 400 quid for an equally rare early overburys that is less starry, but more useable.
So back to “Once you’ve got it, what will you do with it?”
Wall hanger/man cave installation/show pony.

How many people want to spend >1k on a niche wall hanger/man cave installation/show pony?
Hmm. Not many museums out there. Not much scope for retro collectors to claim any credit for it other than opening a wallet.

Value is of course subjective, and if I were the seller I’d: present it better; make a better advert; set a high price and wait as long as needed for the elusive buyer. It’s not going to get any less rare.

But future me - I’m out. As a £600 thing which you use for summer camping, maybe. But don’t lose hope: it will prolly get re listed. Again.

Are those forks supposed to be that curved, there a giant gap between the frame and front wheel....looks really odd?

Also for £1200 you'd think thy would attach the front mudguard stays.

Nice paintwork though.

Forks are low trail, so good at slow speed work where you input a lot with the bars (grinding up a roughstuff pass). But that makes the steering fast at higher speeds - balanced here by a long wheelbase.
(We still tend to snigger at long wheelbase MTBs having been brought up on the 90s quest for light bikes with short stays that are good at technical climbing; in the sort of situations that old bikes and their older riders find themselves in, a bit of extra wheel base is usually beneficial.)
